Self-assessment tool

Self-assessment provide insight into trainees' true comprehension and can help to identify gaps in trainees' knowledge and skills. The purpose of self-assessment is to help the individual know the extent of his abilities and to improve upon them without the need of a performance appraiser. It involves the use of questions such as: what are my strengths? what are my weaknesses? What are the opportunities? What are the obstacles?

OBJECTIVES
The aim is to provide trainers with an opportunity to get insight into trainees’ abilities and knowledge from their perspective and compare them to his own assessment and perception.
GROUP SIZE
The ideal number can vary from 8 to 10 trainees. The exercise will be done individually but it’s possible to organize a second round in groups or in peer to peer assessment.
TIME REQUIRED
The timeframe proposed for implementing this activity could be:
- 10 minutes to present the IO2 competences list and how to use it.
- 15 minutes to fill the template by each trainee.
RESOURCES
Paper, pens and the printed version of IO2 competences list.
PROCESS
The trainer/s will need to:
At the end, you can conduct a chat with the trainees with questions and answers.
- Briefly explain the DIVINT IO2 skills and competences (Language proficiency, Digital proficiency, Cultural self-awareness, Cross cultural interaction, Openness & tolerance, Sensitivity & empathy)
- Ask trainees to assess themselves regarding these skills. Give adequate time for this. Provide a place with no distractions and reflect.
- After trainees have assessed each of the areas, ask them to present it to others and to explain why they made these choices.
- Discussion & debriefing
At the end, you can conduct a chat with the trainees with questions and answers.

STRENGTHS
Once a trainee has defined his strengths, there is one rule that you can always apply: always invest in these strengths.
WEAKNESSES
Being aware of his own weaknesses make it easy for a trainee to work on it for improvement. A typical example of a “weakness” for those fairly new in a country is knowledge of the local language. - Exercise 2
